How it works

In one answer

An AI note taker for Google Meet writes up the call so nobody has to. Google Meet already does the basic version itself: "Take notes for me" is included on Business Standard and above, and if you are on one of those plans you should turn it on before you buy anything. What it stops short of is the expensive part, which is turning what people promised into tasks with an owner and a date, then chasing them until they close.

Does Google Meet have an AI note taker?

Yes, and most people asking have already paid for it. The feature is called "Take notes for me", it runs on Gemini, and it writes a notes document during the call, saves it to the organizer's Google Drive and attaches it to the Calendar event. If a presenter leaves a slide up for ten seconds or more it will also grab a screenshot of it. Google recommends it for meetings of 15 minutes up to a maximum of eight hours.

The part worth checking before you spend money is your edition. Google lists availability as Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Frontline Plus, and the Google AI Pro for Education add-on. Business Starter is not on that list. Neither is it on the separate list of editions that get Meet transcripts, so a Business Starter office gets no automatic notes and no transcript either, which is the single most common reason someone concludes that "Google Meet cannot do this" when their colleague on Business Standard finds that it can.

There is one more wrinkle that trips up larger organizations. Enterprise Starter does get transcripts, but it is not on the "Take notes for me" list. So a company can have searchable transcripts of every call and still no automatic notes document, which feels like a bug and is actually the licensing.

Why it might be switched off even though you have it

Having the license is not the same as having the feature running, and Google changed the defaults in 2026. On Business Standard and Business Plus the setting is on by default. On Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Frontline Plus and the AI Pro for Education add-on it is off by default, which means the biggest customers are the ones most likely to be sitting on a feature nobody switched on.

Admins also got a third option beyond a simple on or off: automatic note taking only for meetings with three or more people, which keeps the bot out of one to one conversations. Google's rollout put the admin setting in place through early August 2026, with the matching end-user settings arriving no sooner than September 21, 2026. If Host Management is turned on in Meet, only hosts and co-hosts can toggle note taking during a call, so a greyed-out button usually means the decision was made above you rather than that your account is broken.

Before you evaluate a single paid tool, open the admin console and check. A meaningful share of the offices that ask us for an AI note taker already have working notes one toggle away.

What Google Meet AI notes do not do

Read a "Take notes for me" document and you will find an accurate account of a conversation. Read it again looking for who owes what by when, and the gaps show up. Next steps get captured as text, not assigned to a person. Nothing lands in anyone's week. Nothing follows up on the Thursday it was due. The document is a record, and a record is not an outcome.

That is the job Officeagent takes. Notes come out as a five bullet summary with decisions listed separately, then every action item carries a named owner and a due date. Anything said in the passive voice gets turned into a person: "we should send the client the revised scope" becomes a task with a name on it, because a promise without an owner is not a task. The recap email is drafted in your tone and waits for approval, then open items get nudged before the date and escalated to the organizer after it, through the follow-up workflow.

  • Five bullet summary, with decisions recorded separately from discussion
  • Every action item carries a named owner and a due date
  • Recap email drafted in your tone, waiting for you to approve
  • Nudges before the due date, escalation to the organizer after it
  • Works from a transcript alone if you would rather no bot joined the call

What is the best AI note taker for Google Meet?

It depends which job is failing, and for a lot of buyers the honest answer is not a purchase at all. If you are on Business Standard or above and you only want a readable summary, Google's own notes are free, already compliant with whatever data agreement you signed, and require nobody to admit a third party bot into the room. Start there.

If you need a deeper searchable archive across every call, a dedicated notetaker beats both Google and us on that specific job. Prices re-verified at each vendor on August 10, 2026: Fathom is free for unlimited recordings, transcription and AI summaries with no time cap, then $20 per user per month or $16 billed annually for Premium. Otter is free for 300 minutes a month, $16.99 for Pro or $8.33 annually, and $30 for Business or $19.99 annually. Fireflies is free with unlimited transcription but no recording and only 20 AI credits a month, then $18 per seat or $10 annually. Tactiq is the Meet-native browser extension and its free tier runs 10 transcripts and 5 AI credits a month, though it prices in local currency and we will not convert a figure we cannot read in dollars.

Pick something like Officeagent when the thing that keeps breaking is not the notes. We rank the whole category, ourselves included and not at the top, in the best AI note taker roundup, and the best AI scheduling assistant guide does the same for the booking half of the problem.

Booking Google Meet calls without the reply-all thread

Someone asks for 30 minutes next week. The agent reads your real availability through the Google Calendar integration, applies your rules about focus blocks and how late you take calls, and proposes three slots in the requester's time zone. You approve one and the invite goes out with the Meet link attached. Reschedules take the same path, so nobody ends up holding two versions of the same call.

External guests never see your calendar and never get a booking link to fill in. They get a normal email offering times, which is what most clients and candidates actually prefer. Mail runs through the same approval queue via Gmail, so a Google Workspace office runs calendar, mail and meetings under one review habit rather than three.

Do you need a bot to join the Google Meet call?

No, and it is the question people ask most. Officeagent can join as a quiet participant, or stay out of the room entirely and work from the transcript and recording your Workspace account already produces. The output is the same either way. Offices dealing with patients, candidates or legal matters usually choose the second option, because a visibly named bot changes how people talk in a sensitive conversation.

Consent rules apply regardless, and they are set by state law rather than by Google. Eleven states require all-party consent to record a conversation, which is a question to settle before switching anything on, for Google's own notes as much as for a third party tool. The state by state position is in our guide on whether AI notetakers are legal.

What connecting Google Meet actually involves

You authorize Officeagent from your Google account, and a Workspace admin can consent for the whole organization instead of leaving it to each person. The scopes cover reading meeting and transcript data so the agent can produce notes, plus calendar read and write for availability checks and approved invites. Sending happens only at the moment a person clicks Approve.

Access is revocable from your Google account settings at any time, and disconnecting removes stored meeting data on our side within 24 hours. None of this depends on you buying a Workspace upgrade. Mixed offices are normal too: Meet for calls with Slack for chat, or Meet alongside Microsoft Teams during a migration, all run under one approval queue. To standardize what gets captured in the first place, the meeting minutes template gives you the structure and the meeting agenda template sets up the call that produces it.

Questions on this

Does Google Meet have an AI note taker?

Yes. It is called "Take notes for me", it is powered by Gemini, and it writes a notes document during the call, saves it to the organizer's Google Drive and attaches it to the Calendar event. Google lists it for Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Frontline Plus and the Google AI Pro for Education add-on. Business Starter does not get it.

Is there a free AI note taker for Google Meet?

If you are on Business Standard or above, Google's own note taking is already included at no extra cost, which is the cheapest correct answer for most offices. Beyond that, Fathom has a genuinely free tier with unlimited recordings, transcription and AI summaries, and Fireflies is free for unlimited transcription though it does not record on that plan. Check your Workspace edition before you sign up for anything.

Can Google Meet transcribe a meeting?

Yes, on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Teaching and Learning Upgrade, Education Plus and Workspace Individual. Transcripts save to the meeting organizer's Drive in a "Google Meet" folder. They work on a computer, laptop or Android device, capture spoken words only, and cannot be paused partway through a session.

How do I use the AI notetaker in Google Meet?

Join the call and select "Take notes for me" from the meeting controls, and the notes document is created and shared afterward. If Host Management is on, only the host and co-hosts can turn it on or off. If the option is missing or greyed out, it is either not included in your Workspace edition or an admin has switched it off for your organization in the admin console.

Why is "Take notes for me" not showing up for me?

Three usual causes. Your edition may not include it, and Business Starter does not. An admin may have it turned off, which is the default on Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Frontline Plus and the AI Pro for Education add-on. Or Host Management is on and you are not the host. Enterprise Starter is the confusing case: it gets transcripts but not automatic notes.

What languages does Google Meet AI note taking support?

English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. It handles one language at a time, so a meeting where people switch between two of them is not supported and the notes will suffer. Google also flags that summaries can come out incomplete or fail to generate entirely if the connection drops during the call.

What is the best AI note taker for Google Meet?

For a plain readable summary on Business Standard or above, Google's own is the best value because you already own it. For a deep searchable archive across every call, a dedicated notetaker such as Fathom, Otter or Fireflies does that job better than either Google or us. Choose an office assistant when the failure is the follow-through rather than the notes.

Can an AI take notes in Google Meet without joining the call?

Yes. Google's own note taking runs inside Meet with no visitor in the participant list, and Officeagent can work from the transcript your Workspace account already produces rather than joining as a participant. That matters for sensitive calls, where a visibly named bot changes how candid people are willing to be.
